Shubman Gill is set for a T20I comeback as India prepare to announce their squad for next month’s Asia Cup, expected to be finalised in the third week of August. Gill, absent from the T20I setup since a bilateral series against Sri Lanka early last year, has missed three successive series but now returns with strong domestic form.
Alongside Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal is also likely to reclaim his spot. Both have enjoyed prolific IPL 2025 seasons – Jaiswal with 559 runs at a strike rate of 160, Gill with 650 runs at over 155 – while Gujarat Titans teammate Sai Sudharsan has forced his way into contention after topping the charts with 759 runs at 156 SR to claim the Orange Cap.
The selectors face a competitive field with in-form regulars such as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma also pushing for places. The Asia Cup, offering only six matches in 21 days and concluding on September 28, comes just days before India host West Indies in a home Test series starting October 2.
Fitness assessments for Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be another key factor. Siraj featured in all five Tests against England, while Bumrah played three under workload management protocols. With the T20 World Cup six months away, the Asia Cup squad is expected to form the backbone of India’s core group.
