India Test skipper Shubman Gill has revealed that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was the “weirdest person” he has ever played cricket with.
Speaking on Apple Music’s YouTube channel, Gill shared details of an unusual experience from Team India’s recent England tour, where they had the chance to meet and interact with Manchester United players.
When asked about the weirdest person he had played cricket with, Gill replied,
“Probably Bruno Fernandes, ’cause he’s from Portugal.”
The India opener explained that while many of United’s English players had some cricketing experience, Fernandes — along with several of his teammates — had never picked up a bat or ball before.
Gill also clarified that he is indeed a Manchester United fan, playfully correcting the host who teased him about not being one.
Team India Meets Manchester United
During the July 20 visit to Carrington, United’s training centre, BCCI shared photos of players from both sides bonding over cricket and football. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and other Indian players engaged in fun activities with United stars including Harry Maguire, who tried facing Siraj’s deliveries with a tennis ball.
Both teams exchanged jerseys — United players received a mix of Team India Test and ODI kits, while Indian players were gifted United’s home and away shirts.
What’s Next for Gill
Gill is currently representing India in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. In the opening match, India bowled out the hosts for just 57 runs and chased down the target in 4.3 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 20. India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in a highly anticipated clash on Sunday, September 14.
