The sacred month of Shravan (Sawan)—dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati—will begin on Friday, July 11, 2025, in North India, and from July 25 to August 23 in South and Western India, according to the Hindu Purnimanta and Amanta calendars, respectively.
Observed with deep devotion, Shravan is marked by fasting, prayers, and special rituals, especially on Mondays known as Sawan Somwar. Devotees also observe the Solah Somwar Vrat (sixteen consecutive Mondays) to seek blessings for prosperity, good health, and marital harmony.
Tuesdays in Shravan are celebrated as Mangal Gauri Vrat, in honour of Goddess Parvati, while other significant days include Sawan Shivratri (to be observed on Wednesday, July 23) and Hariyali Amavasya.
Key Dates for Sawan Somwar Vrat 2025:
-
1st Somwar Vrat – July 14
-
2nd Somwar Vrat – July 21
-
3rd Somwar Vrat – July 28
-
4th Somwar Vrat – August 4
Significance:
Shravan commemorates the mythological event of the Samudra Manthan, during which Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the universe. Goddess Parvati protected him by holding the poison in his throat, leading to his name Neelkanth.
The month is considered spiritually rewarding, with the rituals and fasts believed to bring divine blessings and spiritual upliftment.
