In a significant enforcement action to protect Odisha’s fragile marine ecosystem, the forest department has arrested seven fishermen for engaging in illegal fishing activities inside the Gahiramatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapara district.

The operation was carried out by forest personnel of the Ekakula section, who conducted a targeted raid in the protected no-fishing zone. During the operation, officials seized four fishing nets, one GPS device, a VHF communication set, and around 50 kilograms of fish, indicating organized and deliberate violations.

Gahiramatha Marine Sanctuary is internationally recognized as one of the largest nesting grounds for endangered olive ridley turtles. Fishing activities are strictly prohibited in the area to ensure the safety of the turtles during nesting and breeding seasons.

Officials confirmed that the arrested individuals are currently in custody and legal proceedings are underway in accordance with wildlife protection laws. The forest department reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance against activities that threaten marine biodiversity.

Authorities have intensified surveillance and patrols in and around the sanctuary to curb illegal fishing and safeguard the habitat of olive ridley turtles, emphasizing the importance of conservation for future generations.
