In a disturbing reminder of the dangers of risky selfies, two minors were seriously injured in Odisha’s Malkangiri district after coming into contact with a high-voltage power line.
The incident took place in Chitrakonda block, where 12-year-old Trinath Khil and 17-year-old Uddhab Das Nag climbed onto a rooftop near the Punjabi Chhak area to snap selfies. Unfortunately, the spot they chose was perilously close to a 33kV high-tension electrical line. During the photo attempt, both boys received a powerful electric shock.
One of the boys was flung from the building and sustained serious injuries. Both victims were rushed to Chitrakonda Medical Centre for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his condition, Uddhab was later transferred to Malkangiri District Hospital for advanced care. Trinath is reportedly stable.
This tragic episode underscores the growing addiction to selfie culture, especially among youth who often disregard safety for online validation. Experts have continually warned against hazardous photo-taking behaviour near rail tracks, cliffs, rooftops, and electrical infrastructure.
Authorities have urged parents and schools to educate children about the risks associated with such behaviour and stressed the need for public awareness campaigns.
