The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to revamp the iconic Satya Nagar crematorium with a Rs 60-crore renovation project.
The plan focuses on introducing modern amenities and upgrading the facility to better serve the city’s residents.
Key upgrades include the construction of a rest house for grieving families, aesthetically designed entry and exit pathways, and a dedicated office for death registration. The premises will also have a waiting hall, shops selling cremation essentials, and improved family facilities like toilets and changing rooms.
The project will restore the long-defunct electric furnace and offer both gas-based and traditional wooden pyre cremation options. Two separate platforms will accommodate simultaneous last rites. Additionally, environmental enhancements such as a renovated pond and a park with paved walkways are in the pipeline.
Due to limited space, relocating the crematorium was deemed infeasible, shifting the focus to optimizing the current site. The facelift aims to provide a clean, accessible, and respectful space for final rituals.
Stay tuned as Bhubaneswar’s landmark crematorium transforms into a model of modern urban planning.
