A youth from Pandaripathar village under Bamara in Sambalpur district lost Rs 27,000 to cyber fraudsters who lured him with the promise of a Rs 10 lakh government reward.
According to reports, Rohit Munda received a call from an unknown number claiming he would be awarded Rs 10 lakh for his social service work. The caller asked him to deposit GST charges to claim the prize. Believing the offer, Rohit transferred over Rs 27,000 in multiple instalments to the fraudsters’ bank accounts.
Later, the fraudsters demanded more money, citing different reasons. When Rohit grew suspicious, he refused to pay further. The scammers then abused him over the phone and issued threats.
Realising he had been cheated, Rohit lodged a written complaint at the Gobindpur police station. Police confirmed that they have registered the case and initiated an investigation. Officials assured that cybercrime units are tracking the fraudsters and urged citizens to remain cautious against such fake reward calls.
Authorities reminded the public that government rewards are never disbursed through random phone calls or personal bank transfers. They advised people to verify such claims with official sources before making any payments.
