External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Sunday that Jaishankar will also hold meetings with representatives of the incoming Trump administration during his visit to the U.S.
Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election held in November. Last month, Jaishankar noted that Trump has maintained a positive view of India and that the country is in a better position than many others to build “deeper” relations with his administration, thereby advancing bilateral ties.
“On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America,” the MEA stated.
JD Vance will be the new Vice President of the U.S.
“During the visit, the External Affairs Minister will also meet with representatives of the incoming administration, as well as other dignitaries visiting the U.S. for the occasion,” the MEA added in its statement.
There are concerns in many countries regarding the Trump administration’s policies on various sensitive issues, including tariffs, climate change, and overall foreign policy priorities, especially in light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in West Asia.
This marks Trump’s second term as President; he previously served as the 45th President of the United States from January 2017 to January 2021.
