Wimbledon 2024: The women’s singles semi-final line-ups were confirmed on Wednesday, following victories in their respective quarter-final matches by Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejcikova is set to play against Rybakina, and Donna Vekic will compete with Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Thursday, 11 July.Â
Despite being broken in the opening game of Wednesday’s quarter-final, Rybakina made a strong comeback to defeat her Ukrainian rival with scores of 6-3, 6-2.
The fourth-ranked player in the world, and the highest-seeded remaining in the women’s draw, secured her win in just 61 minutes.
Rybakina has now reached as many WTA-level semi-finals this season as Iga Swiatek, with both players having seven each. Her upcoming match is against the 2021 French Open winner Krejcikova, who eliminated the world’s number 14, Jelena Ostapenko.
On Centre Court, Elena Rybakina concluded Elina Svitolina’s quarter-final run with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Barbora Krejcikova also made it to her first Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday, defeating Latvian 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 7-6(4) in a clash of past French Open champions.
The 31st seed from the Czech Republic maintained her poise from the baseline, prompting 35 unforced errors from her opponent, as Ostapenko’s pursuit of a second Grand Slam title since 2017 came apart on Court One, which notably had its roof open for this rare occasion.
The 28-year-old Krejcikova is now set to compete against the 2022 Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, in the semi-finals.
And then there were four…
