Rishabh Pant created a major milestone on Day 2 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The wicketkeeper-batter overtook Virender Sehwag to become the Indian player with the most sixes in Test cricket.
Pant recorded his 92nd six in only his 83rd Test innings, moving past Sehwag’s tally of 91. His achievement marks another chapter in his evolving reputation as one of India’s most attacking Test batters.
Batting at No. 5, Pant scored 27 runs from 24 deliveries. His quick cameo featured two boundaries and two sixes, both struck against spinner Keshav Maharaj. The first came through an aggressive lofted shot over mid-off, and the second was a powerful hit down the ground that carried into the stands beyond long-on.
Pant now ranks seventh on the all-time global list for most Test sixes. The top names currently include:
-
Ben Stokes – 136 sixes in 206 innings
-
Brendon McCullum – 107 sixes in 176 innings
-
Adam Gilchrist – 100 sixes in 137 innings
-
Tim Southee – 98 sixes in 156 innings
-
Chris Gayle – 98 sixes in 182 innings
-
Jacques Kallis – 97 sixes in 280 innings
-
Rishabh Pant – 92 sixes in 83 innings
-
Virender Sehwag – 91 sixes in 180 innings
Pant’s innings came to an end in the 44th over. Corbin Bosch delivered a rising ball on the leg-stump line, and Pant attempted a pull shot. The extra bounce forced a mis-hit that popped into the air, allowing Kyle Verreyne to complete a simple catch.
Pant’s record-breaking moment adds another highlight to the ongoing Test, further underscoring his influence in India’s middle order.
