The body of Sanyasi Rout, a 75-year-old retired school teacher from Karkachia village, was recovered from the Naluha river near Bangigadi under Khunta police limits, four days after he was reported missing.
Raut had left home on September 26 to attend the weekly market at Gadigaon, but never returned. His family searched extensively and later filed a missing person report at Khunta police station.
On the fourth day, locals spotted a body floating in the river and informed the family. The fire services team reached the spot and retrieved the body. Preliminary investigation suggests that Raut may have attempted to cross the river during heavy rainfall, which had caused a surge in water levels and strong currents.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause.
The incident has left the local community in mourning, with many remembering Raut as a dedicated educator and respected elder.
