In a significant victory for anti-corruption efforts, Ramakanta Sethy, a retired Assistant Block Education Officer from the office of the Block Education Officer (BEO) in Jajpur, Odisha, has been convicted in a bribery case.
The conviction was handed down by the Hon’ble Special Judge, Vigilance, in Cuttack on November 26, 2025.
Sethy was charge-sheeted by the Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The case stemmed from allegations that he demanded and accepted a bribe from a school teacher in exchange for regularising the teacher’s period of absence.
Following the conviction, Sethy was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 4 years, along with a fine. He was immediately sent to jail to serve his sentence.
In addition, the Odisha Vigilance has announced plans to approach the competent authority to stop Sethy’s pension, citing his conviction as grounds for this action.
