Odisha is set to get relief from the scorching heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several districts in the coming days.
The expected light to moderate showers, along with isolated heavy rainfall, will lower temperatures by 2-3°C, bringing respite to residents who have endured weeks of extreme heat, with some areas recording temperatures over 40°C.
Beyond cooling the state, the rainfall is expected to replenish groundwater levels, improve air quality, and reduce humidity, making conditions more comfortable. Farmers preparing for the Kharif cropping season will also benefit, as early showers could help enhance soil moisture.
Thunderstorm and Wind Alerts Issued
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds across multiple districts. The alert remains in effect until April 5, with wind speeds expected to reach 50-60 kmph in some areas.
The affected districts include:
Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhargarh, Rayagada, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Bolangir.
Temperature Drop Expected
IMD officials predict a slight temperature drop as showers begin in southern Odisha from April 2. The rain will spread to Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Rayagada by April 3 and further extend to Gajapati and parts of western Odisha on April 4.
Odisha’s Ongoing Heatwave
Despite the upcoming rain, heatwave conditions continue in parts of Odisha. Boudh recorded the highest temperature at 41.8°C, followed by Jharsuguda (41.6°C) and Sambalpur (41.2°C).
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has warned that April to June will be hotter than usual, with more heatwave days expected. However, he clarified that El Niño conditions will not impact the monsoon season.
Advisory for Residents
With thunderstorms and high winds predicted, residents are advised to take precautions:
-
Stay indoors during lightning events
-
Secure loose objects to prevent damage from strong winds
-
Avoid traveling during thunderstorms
-
Prepare for possible disruptions in power and transportation
The weather shift is expected to provide temporary relief while marking the transition into pre-monsoon conditions in Odisha.
