A couple from Uparkodinga village under Tikiri police limits in Kashipur block of Rayagada district has fallen victim to a cyber fraud, losing a staggering Rs 1.92 lakh from their savings account.
The fraud was allegedly triggered after they unknowingly downloaded a fake mobile application named “RTO Challan” via an APK message.
The victims, Raju Sahu and his wife Sunemi Sahu, installed the app without realizing it was malicious. Within just 30 minutes, their ICICI Bank savings account was debited in seven separate transactions, totaling ₹1.92 lakh. Shockingly, no OTPs or confirmation calls were received during the transactions, raising suspicion of a remote data breach.
Upon contacting the bank, they were informed that their account had likely been hacked through the fake app, which had stolen sensitive banking credentials. Following the advice of local police, the couple filed a formal complaint at the Rayagada District Cyber Cell, seeking recovery of the stolen funds.
Earlier, Raju had also approached Koraput police to report the incident. The couple is now urging authorities to take swift action and raise awareness about such deceptive apps circulating via SMS and APK links.
