As India prepares to face Pakistan in the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 clash at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14, controversy is brewing both on and off the field.
Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings took a unique stance ahead of the match by posting their match announcement on social media without mentioning Pakistan as India’s opponent. The unusual move triggered a flood of reactions from fans, forcing the franchise to disable comments on its X (formerly Twitter) handle.
The controversy comes amid calls from several groups to boycott cricketing ties with Pakistan, citing national security concerns. A plea seeking urgent cancellation of the match was recently rejected by the Supreme Court.
The petitioners had argued that hosting India-Pakistan cricket matches so soon after terror attacks like Phalagam and Operation Sindoor sends the “wrong message” to the nation and undermines the sacrifices of soldiers. “Cricket between nations is meant to show harmony and friendship. But at a time when our soldiers have lost their lives, playing Pakistan sends the opposite signal,” the plea stated, adding that such matches could hurt the morale of armed forces and the families of terror victims.
Despite the controversy, the India-Pakistan match remains one of the most awaited fixtures of the tournament. Both teams are coming into the clash after securing dominant wins — India against UAE and Pakistan against Oman — and they could face each other as many as three times over the course of Asia Cup 2025, depending on progression.
