Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer, is making a significant impact through its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative, Project Nirmal.
Launched in April 2025, the project features 12 solar-powered borewells and 20 water purification systems, providing approximately 2.46 lakh litres of safe drinking water daily to over 23,000 residents across villages such as Jamkhani and Ghogharpalli. In addition, 50 schools have received bio-toilets, improving sanitation access for 2,000 students.
With water scarcity prevalent, particularly during summer, many communities previously relied on turbid water sources. Project Nirmal has effectively reduced turbidity levels to within safe limits (≤1 NTU), enhancing household water quality. Moreover, the solar-powered systems generate around 39,420 kWh annually, cutting conventional electricity dependence and decreasing CO₂ emissions by approximately 33.507 tonnes each year.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasised the importance of safe drinking water for community wellbeing, stating, “Project Nirmal reflects our commitment to integrated development—combining infrastructure, clean energy, and community resilience.”
A resident of R&R Colony, Mendra, Manjulata Padhan praised the initiative, highlighting its transformative effect on daily living conditions and improved hygiene access in schools.
