The President of India has nominated four eminent individuals to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, under the provisions of Article 80(1)(a) and 80(3) of the Constitution.
The nominees include former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, renowned public prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, Kerala-based social worker C. Sadanandan Master, and historian Meenakshi Jain. These appointments fill the vacancies created by the retirement of previously nominated members.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a seasoned diplomat, has held key positions including India’s Foreign Secretary, and served as Ambassador to the United States, Bangladesh, and Thailand. He was also the Chief Coordinator for India’s G20 Presidency in 2023.
Ujjwal Nikam is widely recognized for his role as a public prosecutor in several high-profile criminal cases. C. Sadanandan Master has dedicated his life to social service, particularly in the education sector in Kerala. Meenakshi Jain is a respected historian and academic, known for her scholarly contributions to Indian history.
The nominations were officially notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 12, as reported by ANI.
