The Ministry of Jal Shakti announced that President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu will confer the first-ever Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) Awards on November 18, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The ceremony will also include the presentation of the 6th National Water Awards.

The JSJB initiative, launched on September 6, 2024, in Surat, Gujarat, embodies the Prime Minister’s vision of “Jan Shakti for Jal Shakti.” It promotes participatory stewardship and sustainable water governance through a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach. Guided by the 3Cs mantra—Community, CSR, and Cost—the program aims to ensure long-term water security and resilience against water stress.

Under the initiative, states are divided into five zones, with districts encouraged to construct at least 10,000 artificial recharge and storage structures. For North-Eastern and hilly districts, the target is 3,000, while municipal corporations nationwide are tasked with building 10,000 structures. These include rooftop rainwater harvesting systems and rejuvenated lakes, ponds, and stepwells.

To strengthen urban water conservation, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs partnered with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, motivating Urban Local Bodies to construct at least 2,000 recharge structures each.

This year, 100 awards will be presented, covering three top-performing states, 67 districts, six municipal corporations, one urban local body, two ministries, two industries, three NGOs, two philanthropists, and 14 nodal officers. Winners were selected based on verified data uploaded to the JSJB portal.

Against a target of 10 lakh structures, the initiative reported an impressive 27.6 lakh completed within the timeline. Top-performing districts will receive Rs. 2 crore each, while others will be awarded Rs. 1 crore or Rs. 25 lakh, depending on their category. Each award includes a citation signed by the Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation.

The JSJB initiative has created scalable and replicable models for artificial groundwater recharge, demonstrating the power of community participation and convergence of resources.
