In a major crackdown, the Commissionerate Police raided an illegal gutkha warehouse in the Kolathia area under Bharatpur police station, seizing a huge quantity of gutkha and pan masala valued at approximately one crore rupees.
The warehouse has been sealed, marking a significant step in curbing the banned tobacco trade in Odisha.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Bharatpur police targeted the warehouse and discovered vast stockpiles of gutkha packets and pan masala, all stored illegally. Police sources revealed that the items belonged to various brands and were intended for distribution across different parts of the state. During the raid, the warehouse owner and employees managed to flee the scene, prompting the police to seal the premises immediately.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to trace the culprits and uncover the supply chain. Odisha has stringent regulations prohibiting the production and sale of gutkha and tobacco products, as they pose serious health risks, particularly to the youth. This operation is seen as a strong deterrent against such illicit activities.
The raid has sparked discussions in the local community, with residents welcoming the police action for its potential to reduce the harmful impact of tobacco consumption on younger generations.
DCP Jagmohan Meena assured that similar raids on illegal warehouses will continue, emphasising the police’s commitment to enforcing the ban rigorously.
