The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a groundbreaking initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 February 2024, has successfully powered 10 lakh Indian households with solar energy.

With the scheme marking this significant milestone as of 10 March 2025, it has become a beacon of India’s renewable energy revolution. The initiative has received 47.3 lakh applications and disbursed ₹4,770 crore in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, underscoring the widespread demand for clean, green energy.

In addition to providing collateral-free loans up to ₹2 lakh at a 6.75% subsidized interest rate through 12 Public Sector Banks, PM Surya Ghar has made remarkable strides in reducing carbon footprints. Every solar installation offsets carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees.

States like Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have achieved 100% of their government building rooftop solar targets, while Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are performing exceptionally well.

The scheme offers substantial benefits including free electricity for households, reduced government electricity costs, and increased renewable energy usage, contributing to significant carbon emission reductions.

Subsidies under the scheme vary based on household electricity consumption, with amounts ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹78,000. The initiative also includes the establishment of Model Solar Villages, with ₹800 crore allocated to promote solar energy adoption in rural areas.

Looking ahead, PM Surya Ghar aims to reach 1 crore households by 2026-27, adding 30 GW of solar capacity through rooftop installations, further boosting India’s renewable energy goals, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.
