Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to citizens across the country on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu and Pongal, highlighting the festivals’ shared message of hope, gratitude and togetherness.

In separate letters addressed to people, the Prime Minister described Makar Sankranti as an auspicious occasion that marks new beginnings and renewed positivity, as the Sun begins its northward journey.

Festivals Reflect India’s Cultural Unity

“Makar Sankranti marks a period of hope and positivity, when the movement of the Sun signals new beginnings,” the Prime Minister wrote. He noted that although the festival is celebrated in different forms across India, the spirit and enthusiasm remain the same.

Calling it a reflection of India’s rich cultural diversity, Mr. Modi said the festival strengthens the spirit of unity and togetherness that binds the nation.

Tribute to Farmers and Harvest Traditions

Highlighting the importance of the festival in agrarian life, the Prime Minister said Makar Sankranti holds a special place for farmers and their families.

“It is an occasion to express gratitude to those who nourish us and strengthen our society,” he said, adding that the festival inspires confidence, optimism and hope for the future. He wished citizens prosperity, good health, happiness and harmony in society.

Warm Wishes on Magh Bihu

Extending greetings on Magh Bihu, celebrated in Assam and parts of the Northeast, the Prime Minister described it as a festival that embodies the essence of Assamese culture.

“Magh Bihu is an occasion of joy, warmth and brotherhood,” he wrote, noting that the festival marks the completion of the harvest season and encourages gratitude, generosity and care for one another.

He expressed hope that Magh Bihu would bring peace, happiness, good health and success to all.

Pongal Celebrates Agriculture and Dignity of Labour

Describing Pongal as a shining symbol of Tamil traditions, Mr. Modi said the festival reflects the close relationship between human effort and nature.

“Pongal is deeply connected with agriculture, rural life, our hardworking farmers and the dignity of work,” he said, adding that the festival brings families together and strengthens bonds across generations.

The Prime Minister also noted that Tamil, one of the world’s oldest living languages, adds to the global significance of Pongal. He expressed happiness that the festival is now celebrated enthusiastically not only in Tamil Nadu but across India and by the Tamil community worldwide.
