New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 90th Interpol General Assembly at the Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon.
The 90th General Assembly of Interpol will be held from October 18 to 21. The meeting will be attended by delegations from 195 Interpol member countries comprising ministers, police chiefs of countries, heads of National Central Bureaus and senior police officers.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will mark his presence on the final day of the assembly on October 21. Interpol president Ahmed Naser Al Raisi, secretary general Jurgen Stock and director of the Central Bureau of Investigation will also be present on the occasion.
The General Assembly is Interpol’s supreme governing body and meets once a year to take key decisions related to its functioning. The Interpol General Assembly meeting is taking place in India after a gap of about 25 years. It was last held in India in 1997.
India’s proposal to host the Interpol General Assembly in 2022 coinciding with the celebrations of 75 years of Independence was accepted by the General Assembly with overwhelming majority. The event provides an opportunity to showcase best practices in India’s law and order system to the entire world.
The major role of the Interpol is to help police agencies around the world to work together to make the world a safer place. To do this, the organisation enables the agencies to share and access data on crimes and criminals, and offer a range of technical and operational support.
Jurgen Stock, the secretary general of Interpol, said the General Secretariat provides a range of expertise and services to member countries.
“Interpol manages 19 police databases with information on crimes and criminals ranging from names, DNA database, facial recognition impressions and fingerprints to stolen passports, which is accessible in real-time to countries…. from terrorism to murder accused, from illegal pornography to human trafficking, from financial fraud to crypto frauds, Interpol helps putting a curb on such crimes with the help of its member countries and available technologies,” said Stock.
