Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid heartfelt tribute to legendary tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary. He honoured Munda’s pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and recognized his lifelong fight against colonial injustice.
The Prime Minister said that Birsa Munda’s courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of tribal communities will continue to inspire generations across the country.
The day also marks Jharkhand Statehood Day, and PM Modi extended warm greetings to the people of Jharkhand. He described the state as a land enriched with a proud tribal heritage and wished for its continued progress and prosperity.
Sharing his message on X, PM Modi wrote that the entire nation remembers Birsa Munda with deep respect on this sacred occasion of Tribal Pride Day (Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas). He referred to the revered leader as “Bhagwan Birsa Munda,” acknowledging his extraordinary contribution to India’s freedom movement and his relentless efforts to defend the honour of the motherland.
He further conveyed his best wishes to all residents of Jharkhand, highlighting the state’s rich history, spirit of resilience, and cultural pride.
Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000, a date selected to coincide with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, one of the most influential tribal icons in Indian history.
Born on November 15, 1875, Birsa Munda belonged to the Munda tribe and led a powerful tribal religious and socio-political movement in the late 19th century across areas that now form Jharkhand and Bihar. His birth anniversary is celebrated nationwide as Birsa Munda Jayanti.
Meanwhile, the Union Government is observing Jan Jatiya Gaurav Varsh to honour the contributions and bravery of India’s tribal heroes. As part of this nationwide initiative, the Central Government will hold a national-level celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in Gujarat’s Narmada district, led by Prime Minister Modi.
