A massive traffic jam, reportedly stretching up to 300 kilometres, has turned the roads leading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, into parking lots.
Lakhs of pilgrims eager to attend the gathering found themselves stranded on Sunday, hundreds of kilometres from the site.
Netizens have labelled the congestion the “world’s biggest traffic jam,” prompting police in Madhya Pradesh to halt traffic in various areas to avoid overcrowding. Many vehicles were stopped the day before, leading to hours of delays.
Police advised those affected to seek safe shelter. In Katni, officers announced a traffic halt until Monday and directed vehicles to return to Katni and Jabalpur. Social media shows long queues of cars and trucks in Katni, Jabalpur, Maihar, and Rewa districts.
