Spaniard Paula Badosa, once ranked World No. 2, has officially withdrawn from the upcoming U.S. Open due to a recurring back injury.
The announcement comes just weeks after Badosa revealed a tear in her psoas muscle, which connects the lower back to the leg, following her early exit at Wimbledon.
Tournament organisers confirmed that Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann will replace Badosa in the main draw, with singles action set to begin on August 24. Badosa’s withdrawal also affects the newly introduced mixed doubles event, where she was slated to partner Britain’s Jack Draper.
The 27-year-old has battled chronic lower back issues throughout the season, even contemplating retirement at one point. Her absence marks a significant shift in the tournament’s competitive landscape, especially given her past performances and fan following.
