Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau issued a high alert, warning the country’s security forces about an alleged plot by “active covert groups” to abduct foreign guests attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for ransom.
The alert specifically highlighted several terror outfits, including Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and other Balochistan-based groups.
In response to the intelligence warning, Pakistan’s security forces have mobilized high-level protection teams comprising rangers and local police to ensure the safety of players and their accompanying staff. This move comes as Pakistan hosts the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a significant milestone for the country’s cricketing landscape.
Concerns are escalating regarding Pakistan’s ability to host high-profile international events, given its history of attacks on foreign nationals. Notable incidents include the 2024 attack on Chinese engineers in Shangla and the 2009 assault on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
India has decided to play its share of Champions Trophy games in Dubai, citing security concerns and refusing to travel to Pakistan. This decision has sparked debate, as India has historically been a key contender in the tournament. Geopolitical tensions and Pakistan’s security situation are considered major factors behind India’s decision.
