Pakistan Likely to Drop Shaheen Afridi, Faheem Ashraf Ahead of Asia Cup Super Four Clash

Pakistan cricket is expected to undergo major changes after its humiliating defeat against India in the Asia Cup 2025. With a must-win game against the United Arab Emirates looming, the team management is reportedly considering dropping key players — including Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf — to bring in fresh firepower.

The loss to India exposed Pakistan’s weaknesses in both batting and bowling. Their batting lineup failed to build momentum, while the bowlers struggled to pose any challenge to India during the chase. As the Super Four stage approaches, Pakistan must find the right combination to avoid an early exit.

Possible Selection Changes

1. Faheem Ashraf Out, Haris Rauf In
Faheem Ashraf’s contribution with bat and ball has been underwhelming. In two games, he has scored just 8(4) and 11(14). Though he picked up a couple of wickets against Oman, he was not trusted to bowl against India, indicating a lack of confidence in his abilities.
Haris Rauf, one of Pakistan’s most reliable T20 bowlers, is likely to replace him, adding much-needed pace and penetration to the attack.

2. Hasan Nawaz Out, Khushdil Shah In
Hasan Nawaz was picked for his big-hitting ability after a stellar PSL season (strike rate: 162.19) but failed to deliver, scoring only 9(15) against Oman and 5(7) against India.
Khushdil Shah is being considered as a replacement. He had an impressive PSL 2025 (strike rate: 156.17) and brings versatility — able to bat in different positions and chip in with the ball, offering the captain tactical flexibility.

3. Shaheen Afridi Out, Mohammad Wasim Jr In
Shaheen Afridi’s omission would be a bold move, but his primary job — taking wickets with the new ball — has not been accomplished. He looked ineffective against India and Oman, managing only one wicket.
Mohammad Wasim Jr, though slightly expensive, has the knack for picking wickets and could inject the attacking intent Pakistan needs to turn their campaign around.

Pakistan’s inconsistency makes this clash with UAE a must-watch. While UAE enters as the underdog, Pakistan cannot afford any slip-ups if they want to keep their Asia Cup hopes alive.
