Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif became the target of massive online ridicule after failing to substantiate his country’s claim of downing five Indian fighter jets during an interview with CNN.
Appearing on the international news channel, Asif was directly asked to present evidence supporting Pakistan’s assertion that it had shot down Indian Air Force jets during the recent cross-border escalation, codenamed Operation Sindoor. In response, Asif cited “social media” as proof — a reply that didn’t sit well with CNN anchor Becky Anderson.
“It’s all over social media — on Indian social media, not ours,” Asif stated, claiming the wreckage had been seen circulating online. Anderson, unimpressed, promptly cut him off, saying, “You’re the Defence Minister. We’re not here to discuss social media content.”
The moment quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), drawing sharp criticism and memes. “This is the Defence Minister’s statement? Pakistan is not a serious country,” read one post. Others mocked Asif’s vague explanation with jokes like, “He basically said, ‘trust me bro’,” and “A day without international embarrassment is a day wasted for Pakistan.”
The incident has further strained Pakistan’s credibility on the global stage, especially as tensions with India remain high following recent military operations and cross-border exchanges.
