In the aftermath of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, authorities in the Northeast have arrested 19 individuals for allegedly making inflammatory or anti-India remarks.

Among those detained are students, a lawyer, retired teachers, a journalist, and a sitting legislator, Aminul Islam, from the AIUDF party in Assam. Most arrests were linked to social media posts that authorities deemed provocative or supportive of anti-India sentiments.

The arrests spanned three states: Assam (14), Tripura (4), and Meghalaya (1). Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced strict action against individuals supporting anti-national activities, invoking laws such as the National Security Act (NSA).

This wave of arrests has sparked debates on free speech, online accountability, and national security in the digital age.
