Lok Sabha witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday as opposition MPs protested the introduction of three contentious bills by Home Minister Amit Shah. Clips from the proceedings showed paper balls flying as MPs tore copies of the bills during Shah’s speech.
The bills – the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill – propose that a sitting prime minister, chief minister, or union minister can lose their position if they are arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days for an offence carrying a jail term of five years or more.
The legislation also allows for reappointment after release from custody. Opposition leader Asaduddin Owaisi and other MPs opposed the bills, leading to loud sloganeering and forcing the Speaker to adjourn proceedings till 3 pm.
