Opposition Criticises India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup Match, Calls It a “Political Decision”

Opposition leaders have voiced strong criticism over the scheduled India vs Pakistan group-stage clash in the T20 World Cup 2026, raising concerns about its timing and political implications.

The high-profile match is set to take place on Sunday evening in Colombo.

Congress MP Sukhjinder Randhawa’s Remarks

Congress Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa described Pakistan as a hostile neighbour and questioned the appropriateness of engaging in a cricket match under current circumstances.

Speaking to reporters, Randhawa said that those living in border districts are aware of ongoing tensions and security challenges. He represents Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, which shares a border with Pakistan.

He emphasised that national security concerns should remain a priority in decision-making related to sporting engagements between the two countries.

Sanjay Raut Targets ICC Leadership

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also criticised the fixture, alleging that the match carries political overtones.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Raut said the contest should not be viewed purely as a sporting event. He referred to Jay Shah, the current ICC chief and son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that administrative decisions surrounding the match warrant greater transparency.

Jay Shah has not publicly responded to these remarks.

Background: Tournament Dispute and Pakistan’s Participation

The controversy intensified after Pakistan briefly considered boycotting the group-stage fixture. The decision was reportedly linked to Bangladesh’s exit from the tournament after the ICC declined its request to shift venues outside India due to security concerns.

Political statements from various quarters had earlier objected to certain cricketing decisions involving players from Bangladesh, further fuelling debate around the tournament’s organisation.

However, Pakistan later confirmed its participation in the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match.

PCB Chairman to Attend Colombo Match

Meanwhile, Mohsin Naqvi, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and a federal minister in Pakistan’s government, is expected to attend the match in Colombo. According to reports, he may hold discussions with ICC officials on the sidelines of the event.

The India vs Pakistan encounter remains one of the most anticipated fixtures of the T20 World Cup 2026, drawing global attention from cricket fans. While political reactions continue, tournament organisers maintain that the focus remains on ensuring a smooth and secure sporting event.
