In a heartening tale of grit and talent, a young tribal student from Odisha’s Malkangiri district is capturing national attention.
Bibhuti Mundagadia, a Class 10 student at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Sindhrimala, has earned her place as a national-level handball player—and soon, as the face of perseverance in a government magazine.
Bibhuti, born to a tribal family with modest means—her father a mason and mother a mushroom cultivator—discovered her passion for handball early at her residential KGBV school. Supported by her parents and guided by dedicated teachers, she rose swiftly through district and state-level tournaments, ultimately representing Odisha at the Junior National School Sports Handball Championship in Madhya Pradesh.
The Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India, has chosen her story for its upcoming magazine issue that highlights exceptional student achievements from across the country.
Launched in 2004, the KGBV scheme aims to uplift marginalised girls through education. In Bibhuti, it has found a symbol of what determination can achieve, even in remote tribal regions.
