The Higher Education Department of Odisha, in collaboration with the Board of Practical Training, is set to introduce Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programs (AEDP) starting from the 2025-26 academic year.
This innovative initiative aims to enhance skill development and improve employment prospects for students by integrating practical training with academic learning. The programs, designed in partnership with industry stakeholders, will ensure curriculum relevance and hands-on experience, aligning education with market demands.
The AEDP will be rolled out across 30 universities and colleges in Odisha during the initial phase, focusing on six courses in the Commerce and Home Science streams. A high-level meeting of the Higher Education Department in June finalised the decision, reserving 25% of approved seats in Commerce for AEDP and allowing an additional 50% of seats in Home Science for the program.
This strategic move is expected to bridge the gap between theoretical education and industry requirements, equipping students with practical skills for better career opportunities.
Additionally, the meeting addressed operational reforms for colleges. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and guidelines will be established for changes in college ownership and relocation, ensuring strict compliance during application reviews. Furthermore, directives have been issued to identify and phase out courses with consistently low enrollment or vacant seats over the past three to four years. Designated officers will recommend the closure of such programs to optimize resources and maintain educational quality.
This initiative is poised to elevate the quality of higher education in Odisha while enhancing students’ employability, aligning with the state’s vision for a skilled and job-ready workforce.
