In a major boost to Odisha’s tourism infrastructure, the Centre has announced the development of four river cruise circuits under the Cruise Bharat Mission.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal shared the update in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting Odisha’s rich riverine and coastal assets as key to expanding cruise tourism.
The proposed circuits include Bhitarkanika (NW-14), Jobra (NW-64), Lalitgiri-Udaygiri-Ratnagiri (NW-22), and Balasore Hidden Beach (NW-23). These routes are expected to offer immersive experiences blending nature, heritage, and coastal charm.
Launched in September 2024, the Cruise Bharat Mission aims to double cruise passenger traffic by 2029. Earlier this year, the Centre had also declared six inland waterways in Odisha feasible for cargo and passenger movement, based on detailed project reports and techno-economic studies.
The initiative is expected to generate employment, boost local economies, and position Odisha as a premier destination for river-based tourism.
