Odisha’s Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari announced the construction of approximately 800 cyclone shelters across vulnerable regions of the state.
The announcement came during his recent visit to Delhi, where he met with the Union Home Minister to formally present the demand.
These shelters will be strategically located near schools in areas frequently affected by natural disasters. Designed as multipurpose facilities, they will serve as safe havens during cyclones and other emergencies, while being utilised for social and community activities during normal times.
Minister Pujari emphasised that this dual-purpose approach will ensure the shelters remain active and well-maintained, preventing neglect and disuse. “These shelters will not only protect lives during disasters but also become hubs of community engagement,” he stated.
The initiative reflects a proactive stance on disaster management and infrastructure resilience, aligning with broader national goals of climate adaptation and public safety.
