The Odisha State Law Commission convened its inaugural meeting today at 5:00 PM in the conference room of its office at Toshali Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.
Chaired by Justice Biswanath Rath, the meeting saw the participation of key members, including Manas Ranjan Barik, Principal Secretary of the Law Department and ex-officio member, Professor Lalit Kumar Deb, Senior Advocate Surya Prasad Mishra, and Saurjya Chandra Mahapatra.
The meeting focused on five key agenda items, including the unveiling of the commission’s official logo and email ID (oslc703@gmail.com) for public use. Discussions centred on legal reforms and recommendations to be proposed to the state government.
The commission also approved the appointment of Professor Lalit Kumar Deb, Senior Advocate Surya Prasad Mishra, and Saurjya Chandra Mahapatra as members of its subcommittee, as per Clause 19(1) of the Law Department’s resolution dated March 16, 2016.
Additionally, under Clause 14(2), the commission authorised its secretary to review applications from various government departments, authorities, and institutions seeking legal amendments, assistance, or consultations, and to provide necessary recommendations and correspondence.
The Odisha State Law Commission’s first meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening the state’s legal framework, with a focus on addressing contemporary legal challenges and ensuring effective governance.
