Odisha continues to grapple with the aftermath of a deep depression that crossed the coast near Gopalpur, close to the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border, late Thursday night.
The weather system, moving in a north-northwest direction, has triggered widespread rainfall across several districts, especially in the coastal and southern regions.
Heavy Showers Lash Odisha
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar, the depression has unleashed heavy to very heavy rains since Thursday. A few locations recorded extremely heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Officials have confirmed that the system is weakening and that the intensity of rainfall is expected to gradually reduce from Friday.
Alerts Issued Across Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Sundargarh district, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. A Yellow Alert has been sounded across several other districts of the state, urging people to remain vigilant.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and riverbank areas to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel.
Strong Winds Cause Disruptions
The system brought gusty winds of 50–60 kmph during Thursday night, uprooting trees in several parts of the state. The strong winds and heavy showers led to power outages and traffic snarls in many areas.
Disaster Management on Standby
To handle possible emergencies, disaster management teams and district administrations have been placed on high alert. Relief measures are being coordinated to ensure rapid response in case of flooding or damage.
Rainfall to Persist in Some Parts
While the depression is expected to weaken further, the IMD has warned that sporadic heavy showers may continue in northern and western Odisha over the next 24 hours
