In a landmark decision, the Odisha government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has increased the upper age limit for entry into most government jobs from 32 to 42 years. The announcement, made following a cabinet meeting on May 28, 2025, has been hailed as a historic step by youth and student organisations across the state. The move is seen as a significant opportunity for job aspirants, addressing a long-standing demand that was unmet by the previous administration.
The new policy applies to a wide range of government positions, excluding uniformed services such as police, forest, excise, and fire services, where physical fitness tests are mandatory. Existing relaxations in the upper age limit for Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, women, persons with disabilities, and ex-servicemen will continue as per government regulations.
On May 29, 2025, representatives from various youth and student organisations met Chief Minister Majhi at the State Guest House in Bhubaneswar to express their gratitude. They lauded the decision as a “game-changer” for Odisha’s youth, who have long advocated for an increase in the age limit to provide more opportunities for employment. The decision, made just before the Chief Minister completes his first year in office, has been described as a major gift to the state’s job aspirants.
“This is a historic moment for Odisha’s youth. The Chief Minister has shown that he understands our struggles and aspirations,” said a representative of a youth organisation. The move is expected to benefit thousands of candidates who were previously ineligible due to age restrictions, opening doors to stable government careers.
The decision has sparked widespread celebrations, with youth groups across the state expressing hope that it will pave the way for greater inclusivity and opportunities in government recruitment. As Odisha takes this progressive step, the government’s focus on empowering its youth is being widely appreciated.
