In response to severe weather forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), local administrations in Koraput, Malkangiri, and Ganjam districts have ordered the temporary closure of educational institutions to ensure student safety.
The IMD has issued alerts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across southern and coastal Odisha. With continuous rainfall already causing localised waterlogging and hazardous commuting conditions, district collectors moved swiftly to suspend classes.

The order in Ganjam was formally issued under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, following guidelines from the Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha. The administration cited high risks of severe waterlogging, potential transit disruptions, and lightning hazards as primary reasons for the shutdown.
While classroom activities remain suspended for students, school and college administrators, faculty, and support personnel are required to report to their posts as normal across all three districts. Authorities warned that any deviation from these emergency instructions will invite strict disciplinary action.
Residents across these districts have been advised to keep track of local weather updates, limit non-essential travel, and adhere to safety precautions during peak rainfall hours.
