Odisha Police announced strong action against illegal drug smuggling through railway routes, with Government Railway Police (GRP) registering 200 NDPS cases and arresting 299 accused during 2025.
Officials confirmed that more than 3,352 kg of ganja was seized this year.
GRP Cuttack registered 87 cases, seizing over 1,489 kg of ganja and arresting 116 accused. Similarly, GRP Rourkela registered 113 cases, seized 1,863 kg of ganja, and arrested 183 accused. Police also recovered 2.61 grams of brown sugar during operations.
Investigations revealed that most arrested smugglers hailed from Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Police stated that probes are ongoing to dismantle the larger smuggling networks.
To keep railway routes free from narcotics, the GRP and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have intensified coordination. Joint operations are being conducted at major stations, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Puri, and Rourkela. Suspicious bags and parcels are being thoroughly checked, while sniffer dogs are deployed at stations and train coaches.
Authorities urged the public to cooperate in the anti-drug campaign and immediately report suspicious activities to police.
Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania emphasised that Odisha Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drug mafias and assured strict action against anyone involved in narcotics smuggling.
