As the world prepares to usher in 2026, Odisha Police has rolled out an extensive security blueprint to ensure a safe and seamless celebration in Puri, one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites.
In a high-level review meeting chaired by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Central Range (CR), senior officers from Puri district finalised comprehensive plans for crowd management, traffic control, and emergency response, with a sharp focus on the bustling Shree Jagannath Temple and the scenic sea beach areas.
The meeting addressed the anticipated influx of over 3.5 to 4 lakh devotees and tourists on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026. “Our priority is to facilitate a peaceful darshan at the temple while maintaining law and order across the town and beaches,” stated a senior police official during the briefing.
Key to the arrangements is a massive deployment of forces: 60 platoons of police personnel, supplemented by 10 additional Superintendents of Police (SPs), 33 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), 62 inspectors, and 245 sub-inspectors. This robust manpower will be supported by specialised units, including lifeguards for beach safety, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams for quick response, and Special Task Force (STF) personnel to handle any potential threats.
Surveillance has been ramped up with CCTV cameras and dedicated control rooms operational from December 29, 2025, through January 1, 2026. Traffic management includes detailed parking plans at multiple locations, along with contingency routes to prevent gridlocks in the narrow streets of Puri town. Barricades and public address systems will guide devotees for organised entry into the temple, minimising chaos during peak hours.
Preventive actions are also in full swing, with the invocation of the National Security Act (NSA) against known antisocial elements and ongoing seizures of contraband to curb illicit activities. “These measures are designed to preempt any disruptions and ensure a family-friendly atmosphere,” the official added.
Odisha Police has issued a heartfelt appeal to devotees, tourists, and local residents: cooperate with authorities, adhere to safety advisories, and celebrate responsibly. “Your safety and security are our top priority. Let’s welcome the New Year with harmony and vigilance,” the appeal reads.
