The revered Puri Rath Yatra of 2025, one of the world’s largest religious festivals, has been marred by controversy due to significant delays in the pulling of Lord Jagannath’s Nandighosha chariot.
The issue has ignited a heated political debate, with former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressing deep concern over the mismanagement, while the state’s Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Narayan Naik countered with a sharp rebuttal.
In a poignant post on the social media platform X, Naveen Patnaik voiced his anguish over the disruptions during the Rath Yatra, particularly highlighting the delay in the movement of Nandighosha, Lord Jagannath’s chariot. Patnaik noted that the chariot remained stationary in front of the Simhadwar (Lion’s Gate) of the Jagannath Temple until 7:45 PM, moving only a few meters before the day concluded. This delay, he stated, left millions of devotees worldwide, who had gathered to witness the divine spectacle, deeply disappointed and disheartened.
Patnaik refrained from directly blaming the administration but emphasised the gravity of the situation, referencing last year’s distressing incident when Lord Balabhadra’s idol nearly fell during the Adapa Pahandi ritual, an event that left devotees shaken. “We cannot remain silent about such incidents that hurt the sentiments of countless Jagannath devotees,” Patnaik wrote. He further pointed out that poor crowd management led to injuries among hundreds of devotees, underscoring the need for better organisation. In a reflective tone, he prayed for Lord Jagannath’s forgiveness for those responsible for the lapses and urged the state government to introspect deeply, concluding with the evocative phrase, “Chaka Aakhi Sabu Dekhuchi”.
The post drew a sharp response from Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, who dismissed Patnaik’s criticism with a sarcastic retort. Naik remarked, “It seems Lord Jagannath went to Mumbai to inform Naveen Patnaik about everything.” Questioning Patnaik’s involvement in the festival, Naik added, “Does the public not know what Naveen Patnaik does? Do they not know how much time he spends at the Rath Yatra?” Defending the administration, Naik claimed that despite an unprecedented turnout of devotees, no major mishaps occurred, and the festival proceeded with joy and enthusiasm. He praised the administration for its efforts, asserting that the public was aware of the successful management.
According to reports, while the rituals were completed on schedule, the delay in pulling Nandighosha was attributed to the time taken for Lord Balabhadra’s chariot to navigate a turn, which caused a ripple effect on the other chariots. Social media platforms have been abuzz with varied opinions, with some criticising the administration’s preparedness and others defending the efforts given the massive crowd.
The incident has spotlighted the challenges of managing an event of such scale, drawing attention to the need for meticulous planning to ensure the safety and satisfaction of millions of devotees.
As the debate continues, the Rath Yatra, a symbol of Odisha’s cultural and spiritual heritage, remains a focal point of both devotion and discourse.
