The Odisha state government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding cows, refusing to make any compromises on the matter. In addition, illegal slaughterhouses and cow smuggling activities across the state will be completely eradicated. To enforce these measures, the government is actively considering the introduction of a dedicated cow protection law. A clearer outline of this legislation is expected to emerge before the upcoming assembly session, as stated by Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
During a meeting with a delegation that had been on a hunger strike demanding stronger cow protection measures, Minister Harichandan emphasised that the deep-rooted reverence for cows—often referred to as “Gau Mata” held by every citizen in the country will never be undermined. He highlighted that under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the resolute leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Odisha’s “double engine” government is prioritising cow protection with utmost seriousness.
Further discussions are planned between Chief Minister Majhi and the delegation to refine the approach. The government is deliberating on crafting the most comprehensive law possible to ensure robust cow protection, Harichandan assured the group.
Following the minister’s assurances, the delegation ended their five-day hunger strike. The meeting was attended by prominent figures, including Chief Whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan, Ekamra-Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh, Dharmasala MLA Himanshu Shekhar Sahu, Bhadrak MLA Sitansu Shekhar Mohapatra, Mahakalapada MLA Durga Prasanna Nayak, and other representatives.
This development underscores the BJP-led government’s focus on cultural and religious sensitivities, aligning with national efforts to protect cows, which hold significant symbolic importance in Indian traditions.
