Odisha BSNL mandate

In a significant push to bolster the fortunes of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the Odisha government has made it mandatory for all state departments and offices to utilise the telecom operator’s services wherever possible.

This directive aligns with central government guidelines aimed at revitalizing the public sector undertaking and enhancing its market presence in the state.

The Electronics and Information Technology Department issued a circular instructing all government entities to prioritise BSNL’s internet, broadband, landline, and leased line services in their operations, provided they are technically feasible. This move is expected to provide a much-needed boost to BSNL, which has faced stiff competition from private players in recent years.

The Cooperation Department has swiftly implemented the order by directing District Registrars of Cooperative Societies (DRCS) and Assistant Registrars of Cooperative Societies (ARCS) statewide to assess their current telecom setups and transition to BSNL without causing any operational disruptions. Subordinate offices under their purview must also comply with compliance reports due to the government by September 30.

BSNL, once a dominant force in India’s telecom sector, has been working on network upgrades, including the rollout of 4G and preparations for 5G services. The Odisha mandate could serve as a model for other states, potentially aiding BSNL’s recovery amid ongoing digital transformation efforts nationwide.
