The Odisha government has swung into high gear following a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan, issuing strict directives and canceling official holidays to combat an impending cyclonic threat.
Addressing the media following the preparedness meeting, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari outlined the latest trajectory and safety protocols. According to meteorological assessments, a low-pressure area has already formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal. It is projected to intensify into a depression by tomorrow, further escalating into a deep depression by the 25th. Heavy downpours are expected to lash the region starting the morning of the 26th.
Red Warnings and Potential Landfall
In view of the escalating threat, red warnings have been issued for 20 districts, while other areas have been placed under orange and yellow alerts. The situation is predicted to gradually improve by the 29th.
While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet pinned down the exact point of landfall, models indicate it could cross the coast anywhere between Kakinada and Gopalpur, potentially moving from Odisha toward Jharkhand.
Robust Emergency Measures
To ensure zero casualties and swift crisis management, the state administration has taken decisive steps:
-
Leave Cancellation: All official leaves have been cancelled. Officials who were scheduled to be on leave have been ordered to report back immediately.
-
District Collectors on Alert: Administrations in vulnerable districts have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance.
-
Evacuation & Shelters: Shelter homes have been fully equipped with adequate food supplies, safe drinking water, and essential medicines. Evacuations will be executed immediately wherever required.
-
Fishermen Advisory: All fishermen currently out at sea have been strictly advised to return to the coast by tomorrow morning.
-
Livestock Safety: Ample stocks of cattle feed have been secured, and veterinary experts are on standby to handle animal welfare.
Citizens in affected zones are advised to stay tuned to official weather updates and cooperate fully with district authorities as the state braces for the severe weather event.
