Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati underscored the importance of ensuring that the benefits of Central and State government schemes reach every eligible beneficiary without delay.
During a review meeting of the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department held at the New Abhishek Hall in Raj Bhavan on August 12, the Governor directed authorities to take necessary steps to complete projects within stipulated timelines while maintaining quality and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The Governor conducted a detailed review of the progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission, focusing on the provision of household piped water connections in rural areas. Highlighting that access to clean drinking water is a fundamental need, he reiterated the government’s priority to provide potable water to every household, aligning with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also addressed challenges faced by implementing agencies and emphasised the need for high-quality construction, timely completion, and sustainable outcomes in all projects.
Dr. Kambhampati highlighted the pivotal role of the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department in transforming rural life. He noted that the effective implementation of various government programs could significantly enhance the quality of life in rural Odisha. To strengthen grassroots governance, he advised authorities to explore increasing the number of Gram Panchayats, as decentralisation would make administration more people-centric and improve oversight.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water, and Rural Development, Rabi Narayan Naik, who delivered the welcome address and outlined the government’s commitment to strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions and ensuring rural development. Commissioner-cum-Secretary S.N. Girish presented a detailed overview of the department’s programs, while Commissioner-cum-Secretary Roopa Roshan Sahu and other senior officials, including Director (Drinking Water and Sanitation) Bhinit Bhardwaj, Director (Special Projects) Siddharth Shankar Swain, and Director (State Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Institute) Surendra Kumar Meena, were also present.
A comprehensive presentation covered key initiatives such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, rural housing, MGNREGS, PM-Janman, solar projects, capacity building of Panchayati Raj institutions, Finance Commission grants, marketing systems, and livelihood programs.
The Governor’s call for expanding Gram Panchayats aims to bring governance closer to the people, fostering a developed Odisha through inclusive and efficient administration.
