In a significant step toward modernising the state’s correctional infrastructure, the Odisha government has announced the permanent closure of three sub-jails as part of its ongoing prison reform initiative.
According to a notification issued by the Home Department on July 7, 2025, the sub-jails located in Nayagarh, Balasore, and Bargarh districts will be merged with their respective district jails.
The directive states that the Khandapada sub-jail will be integrated with Nayagarh district jail, Nilagiri sub-jail with Balasore district jail, and Sohela sub-jail with Bargarh district jail. The move effectively denotifies these facilities, removing them from the state’s official list of recognised jails.
The order, signed by the Additional Chief Secretary, directs the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services to ensure the smooth transition of inmates, redeployment of staff, and transfer of jail infrastructure to the designated district jails. While the facilities will cease operations, their physical structures will be preserved and secured until they are formally repurposed by the respective district administrations.
The reform is intended to streamline prison management and enhance administrative efficiency, aligning with the state’s broader correctional policy goals. The notification has taken immediate effect, and relevant departments have been instructed to update records and implement the changes accordingly.
