As Odisha prepares to celebrate Maha Bishuba Sankranti and Hanuman Jayanti on April 14, the state administration and police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a peaceful and orderly observance.
A high-level review meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Ahuja, was held at the Director General of Police’s (DGP) camp office in Bhubaneswar to finalise arrangements for the festivals, with a special focus on Hanuman Jayanti, known for its vibrant processions and gatherings.
The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu, Additional DGP (Law & Order) Sanjay Kumar, Inspector General (Intelligence) Jay Narayan Pankaj, and State Intelligence Director R.P. Koche. Senior police officers, district collectors, and superintendents of police (SPs) from across Odisha joined virtually.
Chief Secy Ahuja commended the Odisha Police for their exemplary handling of Shri Ram Navami, which was celebrated peacefully across the state. He expressed confidence that similar discipline would mark Hanuman Jayanti, emphasising the need for heightened vigilance in sensitive areas. “The success of Ram Navami is a testament to our collective efforts. Let’s ensure Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated with the same harmony,” Ahuja said.
DGP Khurania outlined a robust security framework, directing the deployment of 10 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), including three companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), alongside approximately 200 platoons of state armed police and district police. Sensitive districts have been identified for intensified patrolling, with a focus on preventing any untoward incidents. “Our priority is to maintain law and order while ensuring devotees can celebrate without disruption,” DGP Khurania stated.
To curb misinformation, the Odisha Police DG instructed cyber cells to monitor social media platforms 24/7 for rumours or inflammatory content. Additional measures include strict checks on suspicious vehicles, drunken driving, and illegal liquor sales, as well as restrictions on unauthorized processions. The installation of CCTV cameras, including AI-enabled ones, in key locations will enhance surveillance, while intelligence units have been tasked with gathering real-time inputs to preempt any disturbances.
Community engagement is also a cornerstone of the state’s strategy. Peace committees will be formed, and meetings with local leaders and community groups are underway to foster cooperation. The police have been directed to coordinate with organisers of processions and rallies to minimise public inconvenience, particularly during Hanuman Jayanti’s iconic ‘Shobha Yatras’.
With rising temperatures and the possibility of nor’wester storms(Kalabaisakhi), the administration has prioritised the welfare of both the public and police personnel. Provisions for hydration, shade, and emergency response are being arranged to ensure safety during outdoor events.
The Chief Secretary and DGP called for public cooperation, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly and report any suspicious activities.
As Odisha gears up for these significant cultural and religious events, the state’s proactive measures signal a commitment to harmony and security.
