Odisha is witnessing a slight moderation in the intense cold wave, particularly in western districts, even as fog density has increased, leading to reduced visibility in several areas.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, in the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures dropped below 10°C in 11 cities across the state. Semiliguda emerged as the coldest spot with 5.2°C, followed by Koraput at 6.5°C, Phulbani and Daringbadi at 7°C each, G. Udayagiri at 7.6°C, Nabarangpur at 8.8°C, Chiplima and Angul at 9°C each, Boudh at 9.5°C, Jharsuguda at 9.8°C, and Bhawanipatna at 10°C.
Light fog was observed in Rourkela, Phulbani, Koraput, Jharsuguda, and Bhawanipatna. Scientist Dr Sanjeev Dwivedi noted a marginal rise in night temperatures, mainly in western and interior districts, over the past day.
The highest daytime temperature was recorded at Paralakhemundi at 30.4°C. Since the monsoon withdrawal on October 1, 2025, Odisha has received 26% above-normal rainfall.
No significant change is expected in the weekly weather pattern. However, fog warnings remain in effect until December 18, with light fog likely in districts like Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, and Jharsuguda, potentially causing travel disruptions. Dense fog alerts have been issued for Koraput, Kandhamal, and Sundargarh in the coming days.
Dr. Dwivedi advised caution for motorists and vulnerable groups amid the persisting winter conditions.
