Odisha has recorded a rise in its crocodile population and a strong bird count in the latest wildlife census, Forest, Environment & Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia informed the state assembly.

Crocodile Census

The crocodile population in Odisha has increased by 3.54% compared to last year, reaching 2,193. In Satkosia and Tikarpada, the census identified 65 adult crocodiles and 22 hatchlings, reflecting successful conservation efforts in these scenic habitats.

Bird Census Findings

The census also documented 24,90,986 birds across Odisha during 2025–26. While no rare species were found in Chilika Lake, two new bird species were identified there. Additionally, five new species were spotted in the Hirakud reservoir, adding to Odisha’s avian diversity.

Migratory Bird Patterns

The Minister highlighted that thousands of migratory waterbirds arrive in Odisha’s wetlands each winter to escape harsh cold conditions. They typically begin arriving in November, peak in January, and return to their native habitats by mid‑February as temperatures rise.
